The historical evolution of rubber tracks
The beginnings: the age of steel tracks ()
In the early 20th century, agricultural and machinery pioneers such as Benjamin Holt developed the first steel tracks to prevent tractors from sinking into the ground. While effective on soft soil, these metal tracks had serious drawbacks: excessive weight, high noise levels and systematic destruction of paved roads.
The Kégresse revolution ()
French engineer Adolphe Kégresse invented the first flexible track propulsion system. By reinforcing rubber and fabric bands, he equipped the vehicles of the Russian Tsar's court and later Citroën's half-track vehicles (the Croisière Noire and Jaune expeditions) with unprecedented capability to cross sand, snow and mud without damaging the ground.
The rise of compact construction equipment and the Japanese model ( - )
With post-war reconstruction and rapid urbanisation in Japan, manufacturers (Kubota, Yanmar) developed the first mini excavators. To work in urban areas on paved surfaces without damaging them, the vulcanised rubber track with integrated steel links became the international standard for machines under 10 tonnes.
The innovation of continuous steel cord (Today)

Frequently asked questions about rubber tracks
How do I find the exact dimension of my rubber track?
Measure the width of the band (in mm), the pitch (distance between two consecutive links in mm) and the total number of steel links. These three numbers separated by × (e.g. 230×72×43) identify your model. The reference is also engraved on the inner side of the rubber track.
What is the average lifespan of a rubber track?
Under normal use on mixed terrain, lifespan ranges between 1,500 and 2,500 hours. Driving over demolition debris (concrete, scrap metal) or very hot asphalt can accelerate wear of the rubber.
Why is pair replacement preferable?
Replacing both rubber tracks at the same time guarantees a perfect balance of traction. A pronounced difference in wear between the left and right side puts unnecessary strain on the machine's travel motors.
